Ben Quilty (Australia)
Ben Quilty’s rich impasto works of bold and unsettling subjects explore the problematic relationship between the personal and the cultural. Smeared, smudged, caked and slapped onto the picture plane with bold virtuosity, his works challenge assumptions. Iconic imagery, animated by a textural third dimension, also becomes a vehicle for painterly meditations on the potency of painting. Emphatically expressive, Quilty’s paintings deny rumours that the medium is outmoded. Rather, their powerful and irresistible effect continues painting’s noble tradition as an antidote to complacency.
You can view new works by Quilty at the Saatchi Gallery from 4 July - 3 August 2014. The exhibition celebrates the artist’s achievements in being the overall winner of the inaugural Prudential Eye Awards.
