Ben Quilty at the Saatchi Gallery

In January this year, we ran an article on the inaugural Prudential Eye Awards, which seek to support artistic initiatives from the Asia-Pacific region. If you’re in London at any point from now till 3 August, you’ll have the opportunity to see the distinctive works of Ben Quilty – overall winner of the Awards – at the Saatchi Gallery on King’s Road. Quilty’s signature method is to apply a rich impasto finish, mirroring the painted surface on a twin blank canvas (thus mimicking the psychoanalytic “Rorschach” technique). We’ve decided to be part of the action by documenting his creative process as he made a new piece on site at the Saatchi, and you can check out the photos on our Instagram page.

Aside from his Rorschach series, Quilty will also be showing a selection of his highly expressive portraits in this UK exhibition. Reflecting on his paintings, which are inspired by his own experiences growing up in Australia and on Australian cultural history, Quilty says: “As an Australian artist I am aware of how remote Australia is in the sense that we have European heritage and yet are very much remote from Europe. We struggle to define our identity and thus we create barriers, yet we are geographically bang in the middle of South East Asia. [The Prudential Eye Awards] is an important prize that is about positively enriching that cross cultural bond.”

Quilty’s show will run until 3 August.
