Ben Quilty at the Saatchi Gallery

Ben Quilty is the first Australian artist to stage a solo exhibition at the internationally acclaimed Saatchi Gallery in London, an institution that has helped launch the careers of many famed artists, including Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin and Jake & Dinos Chapman. This follows on from Quilty’s win at the inaugural Prudential Eye Awards for Contemporary Asian Art in January 2014, which involves an invitation to hold a solo exhibition at the prestigious Saatchi Gallery as well as a cash prize of $US50,000.

The exhibition ‘Ben Quilty’, which opened Friday 4 July, will include some past works from the artist – paintings from his time in Afghanistan in 2011 and as the Australian War Memorial’s official war artist. The show will also feature works from ‘Inhabit’, a multi-part series conceived as collective portrait of Australian national identity, encompassing sixteen portraits that range from Captain Cook to the devil to a self-portrait. For Quilty, his solo show and the Prudential Eye Award are important signifiers of ‘positively enriching that cross-cultural bond’ that Australia shares with the rest of the world.
