Ben Quilty at the Saatchi Gallery: Ben Quilty, winner of the Prudential Eye Awards, showcases his psychological paintings at the Saatchi Gallery.

If you go to the Saatchi Gallery this month, it might well feel like you’ve slipped into the psychiatrist’s chair. Australian Ben Quilty’s blotchy paintings bring to mind Rorschach’s inkblot tests. He uses his distinctive gestural painterly style to explore Australian culture and his experience of growing up down under. His darkly reflective subject matter is brought to life with deliberate smudges, smears and three-dimensional brush marks, designed to enhance the reflective, interrogative quality of his work.

The Saatchi Gallery will exhibit a selection of his paintings from his Rorschach series to celebrate Quilty’s achievement as the overall winner of the Prudential Eye Awards, which seeks to identify talent in Greater Asia.

‘As an Australian artist I am aware of how remote Australia is in the sense that we have European heritage and yet are very much remote from Europe,’ says Quilty, ‘We struggle to define our identity and thus we create barriers, yet we are geographically bang in the middle of South East Asia.’

Go with an open mind… and hope you don’t see anything too sinister in the ink blots.
